Business Incubation Centres

World–leading business incubation network

What are ESA BICs?

ESA BICs form the largest business incubation network in Europe.

The mission of this network is to bring space-based solutions to a variety of markets, encourage vibrant competition, bring economic prosperity through job creation and unlock societal benefits through deploying solutions supported by game-changing space technologies.

The key objective is to help entrepreneurs translate their space-based ideas into commercially successful businesses.

ESA BICs offer a wide range of business support services to nurture and grow space-related start-ups.

What support is available?

Each incubation centre is managed by a local administrator that scouts and selects innovative start-ups in the local ecosystem, in partnership with ESA, the national space agency/authority and local stakeholders.

ESA BICs connect start-ups, industry, universities, research organisations, government and investor communities in the area. While embedded in their regions, they have strong international relationships through the network, linking a healthy start-up environment with international market opportunities.

As such, ESA’s network of BICs creates and grows clusters of space-related start-ups across Europe and provides excellent opportunities for start-ups to connect with new business partners around the world.
An ESA BIC typically offers:

  • up to two years of business incubation at an ESA BIC of your choice
  • legal and IPR advice
  • fundraising guidance and opportunities
  • technical support from leading experts in the region, and from ESA
  • access to business partners and networks
  • €50K equity-free funding for product and IP development
  • business coaching
  • workshops and training

Who are ESA BICs for?

The BICs are available for a broad range of businesses ranging from start-ups to scale-up companies, providing stage-appropriate support whether it is around early-stage ideation, venture creation, or further down the line market-entry acceleration and business growth.

Entrepreneurs invited to apply are looking to:

  • develop applications that use space-based systems, such as satellite navigation, Earth observation or satellite communication
  • use space technologies in a non-space domain
  • develop innovative products and services for the space sector

How to apply

Applications to ESA BICs are always open. To apply, please follow these simple steps:

Before starting the application process
Each ESA BIC has their own website, with local contact details, application documents, information about cut-off points, etc. As such it is advisable to contact your local BIC before you start the application process and discuss your plans – they can not only help you through the application process but also give you guidance on whether your business idea is suitable for incubation.
Download the application documents
Download the application documents or request to receive them from your local BIC. Please note both the general and the specific local requirements detailed in the Cover Letter template. Only applications that fulfil all the requirements will be considered. If in any doubt, contact your local BIC for clarifications.
Write and submit the application
Fill in the templates for the cover letter, the business plan, the incubation proposal and related appendices. Submit the required application documents to the relevant BIC.
Wait for feedback from the ESA BIC
All the applications received before the specified cut-off date will be reviewed by the Tendering Opening Board (TOB). If your application is found eligible, the ESA BIC will invite you to present your business idea at the Tender Evaluation Board (TEB), which usually takes place a few weeks later.
Present your business idea
You will have the opportunity to give a short presentation of your business idea and answer questions from the TEB. The board will then evaluate your application and, if successful, you will be invited to sign an incubation contract.
Review and sign the incubation contract
You will receive the incubation contract from your ESA BIC, and a service or rental agreement if applicable. Please note that the contract can only be signed by a company, so make sure you have registered your company before this step.
Start your ESA BIC journey!
Once the contract, and where applicable service or rental agreement, has been signed by you and the relevant ESA BIC, it is time for your kick-off meeting where your next steps on this journey will be discussed and determined.
